This is one of my favorite designs. It is retired from my shop and will never appear again, however I didn't want to deny the world its soots, so here is the pattern. These little guys first appeared in Ghibli movie, My Neighbor Totoro, and later in Spirited Away. Please enjoy this pattern and if you have any questions, please ask me. I'll be happy to help you as much as I can.

Materials:
Black worsted weight yarn
Black "Fun Fur" or another fuzzy novelty yarn
Polyfil Stuffing
White Felt
6mm Safety Eyes
H Hook
Nylon Bristle Brush

Instructions:

Cut two 3/8" circles out of the white felt. Cut a small hole in the center to place the eye post through.

Holding the fun fur and the black worsted weight yarn, chain 2
1. 6sc in second chain from hook (6)
2. 2 sc increase in each (12)
3. 2 sc increase, 1 sc (18)
4. Work one row even (18)
5. sc decrease, 1 sc (12)
At this point, add the eyes and stuff with polyfil.
6. Sc decrease (6)
Break yarn leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Thread tail through remaining loops and weaving in the tail.

Brush Soot with Nylon Bristle Brush to loosen the "Fun Fur" and give a more sooty appearance. You may want to trim the whites of the eyes as they tend to distort when pushed through the thick material.

となりのトトロ (Tonari no Totoro) My Neighbor Totoro © 1988 Studio Ghibli. Written and Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.

What size crochet hook do you use?

Shannon,
This pattern lists an "H" hook in the required materials list.
